It's a maaaaaad world
I am playing around with a large scale strip that I hope to serialize in the Hive anthology. It is called "The Book of Violence" and if it comes out the way I see it, it will be pretty crazy. I have been thinking a lot lately (mostly since I had a kid, and now with another on the way) about the culture of violence we live in. Not only do we deal with crime, war and such but we revel in violent video games, movies, comics, etc. I have been thinking about the phrase, "blessed are the peace makers" and wondering about my roll in that as well. So, the strip is all about violence in it's many forms. I hope to make it so over the top as to make it seem as ridiculous as it is (especially for those who use it for their own ends). It is hard to be a peace maker because we are born into this culture. I hope it will be fun. Fun? Maybe it could be put in a book some time.

Sounds like a pretty cool project. Can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt. Just finished first strip. I am thinking about having a printer copy them as posters that I can hang in shops around town. I will post soon.

Violence is a form of entertainment that really disgusts me and is something I've been wanting to address as well. I wrote a sweet story a few years ago about two opposing groups of creatures and the only endings I could come up with that seemed natural were to have both sides duke it out in war. I scrapped so many versions of the story because I realized it was up to me how the story ended and I didn't want to add another example of violence to the bloody pile. Anyway, I can't wait to see what you come up with. Violence just justifies war and hate crimes and all sorts of other things, let alone the kind of thinking that runs this country. If we cultivate a different kind of thinking we can create different results :)
ReplyDeleteIn other news, your cartoons are amazing! They remind me of awesome.
